Purpose of the Bridge
Before we begin studying Ecclesiastes, it is important to understand where it fits within God’s unfolding story of redemption. Every book of Scripture builds upon those that come before it. Proverbs teaches us how wisdom ordinarily guides those who fear the Lord. Ecclesiastes now asks a different question: What remains when every earthly source of meaning is tested? Rather than contradicting Proverbs, Ecclesiastes completes the picture by exposing the limitations of life viewed only “under the sun” and is directing our hearts back to God.
From Wisdom’s Promise to Wisdom’s Questions
Throughout the Old Testament, God revealed Himself as the Creator, Covenant Keeper, Deliverer, and King. He gave His people His Law, established the kingdom under David, and granted Solomon extraordinary wisdom. In the book of Proverbs, Solomon teaches that fearing the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and that walking in God’s ways ordinarily leads to blessing, righteousness, and stability.
Yet even the wisest person eventually encounters questions that Proverbs alone does not fully answer. Why do the righteous sometimes suffer? Why do the wicked often prosper? Why does death come to both the wise and the foolish? Why do achievement, wealth, pleasure, and human accomplishment ultimately leave the heart unsatisfied? Ecclesiastes begins where these questions arise.
A Fallen World Changes Everything
The frustration described in Ecclesiastes is not due to God’s creation being meaningless. Rather, it is because humanity lives in a world affected by sin. Ever since the Fall, creation has been marked by futility, labor, sorrow, injustice, and death. Human wisdom can observe these realities, but it cannot remove them.
Again and again, the Preacher examines life “under the sun”; this is life viewed only from an earthly perspective. When God is excluded from the equation, even life’s greatest accomplishments cannot provide lasting satisfaction. The endless cycles of work, pleasure, possessions, knowledge, and success cannot answer the deepest longings of the human heart.
What This Bridge Establishes
Ecclesiastes is not a book of despair. It is a book of honest evaluation. It patiently strips away every false source of security until only one foundation remains. Throughout the next seven days, we will discover that the problem is not God’s world but humanity’s attempt to find ultimate meaning apart from Him. The book teaches us that every earthly pursuit is temporary, but God alone is eternal.
Its message prepares our hearts to recognize that true wisdom is not merely knowing how to live well. Instead, it teaches us that it is knowing the One for whom we were created.
Why This Matters
Every generation asks the same questions that Solomon asked. People pursue careers, wealth, knowledge, entertainment, relationships, accomplishments, and personal success, hoping they will provide lasting fulfillment. Yet apart from God, every generation eventually discovers the same conclusion: earthly things cannot satisfy an eternal soul. Ecclesiastes speaks with remarkable relevance because it confronts the questions every human heart eventually faces.
How This Prepares Us for Ecclesiastes
As we begin this study, we should not expect quick answers or simple formulas. Ecclesiastes invites us into an honest journey of reflection. It teaches us to look beyond temporary circumstances and to measure life from God’s eternal perspective. By the end of the book, the search for meaning will lead us to the simple yet profound conclusion that lasting purpose is found only in fearing God and living in humble obedience to Him.
Christological Direction
Ecclesiastes exposes the emptiness of every earthly hope that is separated from God. In doing so, it prepares us for Jesus Christ, who alone offers the eternal life, lasting joy, and true purpose that life “under the sun” can never provide. What Solomon could only anticipate through wisdom, Christ fully reveals through His person and work.
A Prayer
Heavenly Father, as we begin our study of Ecclesiastes, give us humble hearts that are willing to examine where we seek meaning and security. Remove every false hope that competes with You, and teach us to see life from Your eternal perspective rather than merely through earthly eyes. Prepare us to receive the wisdom that leads us to fear You, trust You, and ultimately know Your Son more deeply. May this study draw us closer to You and strengthen our faith in every season of life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
