What This Forms in Us
Ecclesiastes teaches that life is like a vapor; it is temporary, fragile, and beyond our complete control. James echoes this same truth when he asks:
“For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” 🙏 James 4:14 (NKJV)
The similarity is striking. The Hebrew word hebel in Ecclesiastes describes a breath or mist that quickly disappears. James uses the same image to remind believers that life is brief and that every day is a gift from God. This truth is not meant to produce fear or despair. Instead, it forms humility. Followers of Christ learn to hold their plans with open hands, recognizing that God alone knows tomorrow. Rather than living with anxious self-confidence, believers develop a quiet dependence upon the Lord. The more we understand God’s sovereignty, the more we learn to trust His wisdom.
How This Is Lived Out
James confronts a common temptation: living as though we are the masters of our own future. Many people make plans without ever considering God’s will. They assume tomorrow is guaranteed and that success depends entirely upon their own abilities. James lovingly corrects this attitude. Instead of saying, “Today or tomorrow we will go...” believers learn to say, “If the Lord wills...” This is far more than a phrase. It is an attitude of the heart. Living wisely means planning diligently while remaining completely submitted to God’s direction. We work faithfully, make responsible decisions, pursue excellence, and prepare for the future, but we recognize that every opportunity, every blessing, and every tomorrow rests in God’s gracious hands. Such dependence does not weaken our efforts. It sanctifies them.
Practice for Today
As you move through today’s responsibilities, intentionally place each plan before the Lord.
Ask yourself:
Am I trusting more in my plans than in God’s wisdom?
Have I invited God into the decisions I am making?
Am I grateful for today’s opportunities rather than assuming tomorrow is guaranteed?
Is there a good work I know God is calling me to do that I have delayed?
James concludes this passage with a practical challenge:
“Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” 🙏 James 4:17 (NKJV)
Wisdom is not merely knowing God’s will. Wisdom is faithfully doing it today.
Formation Truth (To Carry Forward)
The wise believer does not measure life by how much can be accumulated before death but by how faithfully each day is lived before God. Ecclesiastes teaches us that life is temporary.
James teaches us how to live in light of that truth.
We plan with diligence.
We trust with humility.
We obey without delay.
We rejoice in every good gift God provides.
Our confidence rests not in controlling tomorrow but in belonging to the God who already holds tomorrow in His hands. This, my friend, is the life of wisdom!
A Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that our lives are precious gifts held securely in Your hands. Forgive us for the times we have relied on our own understanding or assumed we control the future. Teach us to make our plans with humility, to seek Your will in every decision, and to faithfully obey what You have placed before us today. Help us to trust You with tomorrow while living wholeheartedly for You today. May every moment of our lives reflect joyful dependence upon Your wisdom, Your grace, and Your sovereign care. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
