Christological Direction
(Genesis 1:26–28) stands as one of the most foundational passages in all of Scripture. Humanity is created in the image and likeness of God, distinct from all other creation and entrusted with authority, purpose, and blessing. This moment establishes not only who humanity is, but what humanity was meant to be.
Yet Scripture also reveals that this image, while not erased by sin, becomes fractured and distorted after the fall. The Christological direction of this passage points forward to the One who would perfectly reveal the image of God and restore what was broken.
Jesus Christ is presented in the New Testament as the accurate and complete image of God. Where Adam failed to live faithfully under God’s authority, Christ obeyed fully. Where humanity misused dominion, Christ exercised righteous kingship marked by humility, service, and love. The original mandate to “have dominion” finds its fulfillment not in domination, but in Christ’s redemptive reign.
(Genesis 1:26–28) also anticipates Christ’s role as the representative Man—the One who fulfills humanity’s vocation on behalf of all who belong to Him. In Christ, the image of God is not only revealed but renewed. Those united to Him are being restored into that image, reflecting God’s character as they were initially designed to do.
This passage, therefore, looks beyond creation itself and toward redemption. Humanity’s purpose was never abandoned; it is reclaimed and completed in Jesus Christ.
Key Truth for Today
We were created in God’s image, but that image finds its fullness and restoration in Christ alone. Our identity, dignity, and purpose are securely rooted in Him.
A Prayer
Lord God,
You created humanity in Your image and entrusted us with purpose and responsibility. We confess that we have fallen short of that calling. Thank You for revealing Your perfect image in Jesus Christ. Shape our lives to reflect Him more clearly each day, restoring in us what sin has distorted. May we live under Your authority with humility, obedience, and joy.
Amen.
