Job - Day 1 - Looking Back at God's Story (June 24)
Day 1 Narrative Continuity Bridge / Job 1:1–5
Scripture: The Book of 🙏 Job 1–42 (NKJV)
Looking Back at God’s Story
🙏 Genesis 1:1–31 (NKJV);🙏 Genesis 3:15 (NKJV);🙏 Genesis 12:1–3 (NKJV);🙏 Exodus 6:6–8 (NKJV)
Before we begin Job, it is important to remember what God has already revealed throughout Scripture. We have watched God create the world and declare it good. We have seen humanity fall into sin and rebellion, yet God immediately began His work of redemption. Throughout the generations, God has faithfully preserved His promises, called His people, established covenants, delivered the oppressed, judged evil, and demonstrated His unwavering commitment to His redemptive plan.
Again and again, Scripture has shown that God remains sovereign over history. Nations rise and fall, leaders come and go, circumstances change, but God’s purposes continue to move forward exactly as He intends. His faithfulness has never depended upon human strength or human understanding.
Yet as we arrive at the Book of Job, a profound question emerges. If God is sovereign, faithful, just, and good, how should His people respond when life seems to tell a different story? What happens when suffering enters the life of someone who genuinely fears God? What happens when tragedy strikes without warning and no obvious explanation is given?
The Book of Job invites us into that struggle. Rather than focusing on kings, nations, battles, or covenants, Scripture brings us into the personal story of a faithful man whose life is suddenly shattered. Through Job’s experience, God will lead us beyond simple answers and into a deeper understanding of faith, trust, suffering, and divine wisdom.
As we begin this journey, we are invited to remember what we already know about God’s character as we prepare to wrestle with questions that every believer eventually faces.
A Different Kind of Story
As we arrive at the Book of Job, the focus shifts dramatically. Instead of following the history of a nation, a king, or a covenant people, Scripture brings us into the life of one man. Job is not introduced as rebellious or wicked. In fact, he is described as blameless, upright, God-fearing, and faithful. Yet within a very short time, everything changes. His wealth is taken away. His children die. His health is destroyed. The stability and blessings that once marked his life disappear almost overnight. The story immediately confronts readers with a difficult reality: faithful people sometimes suffer deeply.
The Question Beneath the Suffering
🙏 Job 1:6–22 (NKJV); 🙏 Job 2:1–10 (NKJV)
The Book of Job is not merely about pain, loss, or hardship. Beneath every event lies a deeper spiritual question. Can God be trusted when His purposes are hidden? Many people find it easy to praise God when life is going well. Faith often feels strong when blessings are abundant, and prayers seem to be answered quickly. But what happens when suffering enters the story? What happens when God appears silent? What happens when circumstances no longer make sense? Job forces us to wrestle with these questions alongside him.
What God Is Addressing
🙏 Job 28:12–28 (NKJV); 🙏 Isaiah 55:8–9 (NKJV)
Throughout this book, God begins addressing one of the deepest struggles of the human heart: the desire to understand everything He is doing. Job and his friends will spend many chapters searching for explanations. They will wrestle with justice, suffering, righteousness, wisdom, and the ways of God. Yet the book continually reminds us that finite people cannot fully comprehend the infinite wisdom of God. The deeper issue is not simply why suffering exists. The deeper issue is whether God’s people will trust Him even when they cannot see the full picture.
Preparing for the Journey Ahead
🙏 Job 38:1–7 (NKJV); 🙏 Job 42:1–6 (NKJV)
As we begin Job, prepare your heart for a different kind of study. This book does not offer simple answers to every difficult question. Instead, it invites us into a deeper understanding of God’s sovereignty, wisdom, power, and faithfulness. Job teaches that faith is not merely trusting God when life makes sense. Mature faith learns to trust God when life does not make sense. It rests in God’s character even when His purposes remain hidden. The journey ahead will challenge us, encourage us, humble us, and ultimately direct our attention to the greatness of God Himself.
Reflective Faith Question
When life becomes difficult, and God’s purposes seem hidden, will I trust His character even when I cannot understand His plan?
A Prayer
Heavenly Father, as we begin the Book of Job, help us approach Your Word with humble hearts and willing minds. Teach us to trust You not only in seasons of blessing but also in seasons of uncertainty and suffering. When we do not understand what You are doing, remind us that Your wisdom is greater than our understanding and Your purposes are always good. Strengthen our faith to rest in Your character even when our circumstances are difficult. As we walk through Job’s story, help us see Your sovereignty, Your faithfulness, and Your power more clearly. Draw us closer to You and teach us to trust You more deeply each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
