Leviticus - Day 5 - Holiness: Drawing Near on God’s Terms (Feb-28)
Christological Direction / Leviticus 17:11 (NKJV)
SCRIPTURE LINK: 🙏 Leviticus 17:11 (NKJV)
“For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.”
Context in the Story
Leviticus 17 marks a turning point in how Israel is to understand life, worship, and holiness. God draws a clear line between common life and sacred life by centering everything on blood. Blood is not merely a physical substance; it represents life itself. God declares that life belongs to Him and that blood has been specifically given for atonement. This verse anchors Israel’s understanding that forgiveness is not achieved through effort or morality, but through God’s appointed means of reconciliation.
Theological Meaning (What the Text Teaches on Its Own Terms)
Atonement is not a human achievement; it is a divine gift. God states, “I have given it to you upon the altar.” Blood is sacred because life is sacred, and only God can provide what is needed to restore a broken relationship with Him. Sin brings death, and reconciliation requires life in exchange. This verse teaches substitution, mercy, and divine provision as the heart of forgiveness.
The Problem God Begins to Address
Humanity cannot repair its separation from God by intention, emotion, or religious effort. Sin carries real weight and real consequence. Without a God-given means of atonement, guilt remains unresolved and access to God remains closed. Leviticus 17:11 confronts the reality that forgiveness requires something humanity cannot produce on its own: a life offered in place of another.
Fulfillment in Christ
The meaning of Leviticus 17:11 finds its fulfillment in Christ through the unfolding story of Scripture, not through allegory. Jesus fulfills this truth by offering His own life. The blood that once symbolized atonement now becomes the actual means by which eternal atonement is accomplished. What was given temporarily through sacrifices is given fully and finally through Christ. His blood is not a symbolic provision; it is complete redemption.
Redemptive Fulfillment (Within Scriptural Boundaries)
Scripture consistently testifies that Christ’s blood accomplishes what animal sacrifices could only point toward. His sacrifice is once and for all, sufficient for every sin, and effective for every believer. Leviticus 17:11 establishes the divine principle; the New Testament reveals its completion without altering its meaning or structure.
Canonical Integrity Preserved
Leviticus is not replaced by Christ; it is fulfilled by Him. The theology of blood, life, and atonement remains intact. Christ does not bypass God’s holiness; He satisfies it. The same God who required blood for atonement is the God who provides His Son as the final atonement.
Summary
Leviticus 17:11 teaches that life belongs to God and atonement comes only by His provision. Christ becomes the ultimate fulfillment of that provision, offering His life so others may live.
Simple Summary
God gave blood for atonement. Jesus gave His blood for salvation.
A Prayer
Father, thank You for giving what we could never provide. Teach us to honor the holiness of Your sacrifice and to walk in gratitude for the life Christ purchased for us. Help us live as people redeemed by Your mercy and shaped by Your truth. Amen.

“Without a God-given means of atonement, guilt remains unresolved and access to God remains closed.” The life and death in that statement is enough to wrap the head around for a lifetime. He did it for us, He offers it to us, but only He can do it within us … and that’s where humanity fights back foolishly … and that’s where my heart is drawn to Him. Like the hymn says “Because a sinless Savior died my sinful soul in counted free …”
Great post
I just hope many will except that the messiah is Jesus and he wants them to know his Grace!
