Parable Series: The Workers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20:1–16)
“Grace isn’t earned — it’s given.”
The Parable:
A landowner hires workers at different times throughout the day, yet pays them all the same wage. Those who worked the longest grumble at this “unfairness.”
Initial Misunderstanding:
It seems unjust. Shouldn’t those who worked more hours get more pay?
Deeper Meaning:
Jesus reveals that God’s grace is not distributed by human standards of fairness. It is generous, sovereign, and unearned. The first and the last are equal before God.
What did we learn?
Rejoice in God’s grace, don’t compare it.
Beware of jealousy when God blesses others.
Salvation is by grace, not human merit.
A Prayer
Gracious Lord,
Thank You for Your boundless grace that is not earned but freely given. Forgive us when we compare ourselves to others or grumble at what seems unfair. Teach us to rejoice in every blessing You pour out and to celebrate Your goodness toward all. May we rest in the truth that salvation comes only by Your mercy and not by our works.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
