The Journey Through the Wisdom Books
As we arrive at the Song of Solomon, we complete a remarkable progression through the Old Testament’s Wisdom Literature. Proverbs teaches that true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord and provides practical instruction for living a life that honors God. Ecclesiastes then examines every earthly pursuit- wealth, pleasure, work, knowledge, and achievement - and concludes that life apart from God is ultimately empty and fleeting. Having established both the foundation of wisdom and the limitations of life “under the sun,” Scripture now turns to one of God’s greatest gifts: the covenant relationship of marriage.
Rather than ending with life’s frustrations, God’s Wisdom Books conclude with hope, celebrating a relationship established by the Creator before sin entered the world. Song of Solomon reminds us that God’s gifts are not to be rejected or abused, but to be received with gratitude and enjoyed according to His perfect design.
A Celebration of God’s Design for Marriage
Song of Solomon, also known as the Song of Songs, is traditionally attributed to King Solomon and is the final book of the Bible’s Wisdom Literature. Unlike Proverbs, which consists primarily of instruction, or Ecclesiastes, which reflects on life’s deepest questions, Song of Solomon is a beautifully crafted collection of Hebrew love poetry celebrating the joy, beauty, purity, and permanence of covenant marriage.
From its opening verses, the book introduces readers to the affectionate relationship between a bride and her bridegroom. Their words express admiration, commitment, delight, and longing. Scripture presents these expressions not as something shameful but as a beautiful reflection of God’s original design for marriage—a lifelong covenant characterized by faithful love, mutual honor, trust, exclusivity, and joyful companionship.
Marriage in God’s Redemptive Story
Marriage did not originate with human culture or society. It was established by God Himself in the Garden of Eden when He united Adam and Eve as husband and wife. Throughout Scripture, marriage serves as one of God’s clearest illustrations of covenant faithfulness, demonstrating commitment, sacrifice, unity, and enduring love.
Because marriage is God’s creation, it reflects His character. Faithfulness, forgiveness, selfless love, devotion, and covenant commitment are not merely ideals for married couples. They are qualities that flow from the very nature of God. Song of Solomon celebrates these truths by portraying love that is exclusive, honorable, and enduring rather than selfish, temporary, or self-seeking.
Looking Beyond the Marriage Covenant
While Song of Solomon should first be understood in light of its original purpose, a celebration of covenant marriage, its themes naturally point readers toward an even greater reality revealed throughout the rest of Scripture. The prophets frequently described Israel as God’s covenant bride, revealing His steadfast love despite His people’s repeated unfaithfulness.
The New Testament brings this picture to its fullest expression by revealing Jesus Christ as the Bridegroom who loves His church sacrificially. Christ’s perfect love, demonstrated through His death and resurrection, fulfills everything earthly marriage was designed to reflect. Every faithful marriage ultimately points beyond itself to the eternal covenant between Christ and His redeemed people.
For this reason, we should not force symbolic meanings into every detail of Song of Solomon. Instead, we first appreciate the book for what it is. A celebration of God’s good gift of marriage, while also recognizing how the broader storyline of Scripture allows us to see its deeper Christ-centered significance.
Preparing Our Hearts for This Study
As we begin this week’s study, approach Song of Solomon with both gratitude and reverence. Allow its poetry to deepen your appreciation for God’s wisdom in creating marriage and His desire for relationships marked by purity, faithfulness, and covenant love.
At the same time, let every chapter remind you of the greater love revealed in Jesus Christ. Human marriage, wonderful as it is, ultimately serves as a reflection of the perfect love of our Savior, who gave Himself for His people and remains forever faithful to those who belong to Him. Throughout this study, we will celebrate both God’s design for marriage and the greater covenant of love that finds its fulfillment in Christ.
A Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for creating marriage as a beautiful covenant that reflects Your wisdom, faithfulness, and love. As I begin studying Song of Solomon, help me to appreciate both Your design for covenant marriage and the greater love revealed through Jesus Christ. Open my heart to understand Your Word with humility, gratitude, and reverence, and teach me to reflect Your faithful love in every relationship. May this study deepen my love for You and strengthen my desire to walk faithfully in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
