The Tenets of Leadership: Honor the Messenger
“Hard truth builds stronger leaders.”
The second tenet is Honor the Messenger. True leadership is not found in silencing voices but in humbly receiving them. Leaders who walk with Christ understand that every word of truth, whether encouragement or correction, is a gift from God. To reject it is to reject an opportunity to grow. To receive it is to honor both the messenger and the God who sends them.
“Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Faithful are the wounds of a friend.”
(Proverbs 27:5–6)
Correction, though uncomfortable, is an act of love. A wise leader welcomes it, knowing that truth spoken in love strengthens the soul and steadies the path. Leadership is not about defending one’s image but about cultivating humility, integrity, and a teachable heart.
When leaders acknowledge their own blind spots and accept rebuke with grace, they model Christlike humility. This builds not only respect but a culture of trust and accountability. Faithful wounds are not simply given, they must also be received.
To honor the messenger is to honor God, who often uses others as His mouthpiece. The truth-teller may risk much to speak, but their courage blesses both the leader and the community. May we be leaders who welcome truth, embrace correction, and walk in humility before the Lord.
Question for the Reader?
How can you intentionally honor the messengers God places in your life by receiving their words, whether encouragement or correction with humility and gratitude?
Prayer
Lord, give me a heart that welcomes truth, even when it stings. Help me to see correction as Your gift, not as an attack. Teach me to honor those who speak with courage, and to walk in humility as Christ did. May my leadership reflect integrity, grace, and a willingness to grow. Amen.
Reflection Question
When was the last time I received a correction with humility? Did I honor the person who spoke it, and more importantly, did I honor God by listening?
