The Tenets of Leadership: Humility The Greatest Strength
“True leaders rise by lowering themselves to serve.”
Humility keeps a leader grounded. The humble leader remembers those who helped them along the way. No one climbs the ladder of leadership alone. Somewhere along the way, someone gave you a hand. Never forget the faces on the way up, because you will surely meet them on the way down. Humility remembers its roots. Arrogance forgets and collapses under its own weight.
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)
Pride stands in direct opposition to God because it exalts oneself above Him. To be proud is to rely on one’s own wisdom, strength, or status instead of depending humbly on God. The word “resists” suggests active opposition. God Himself stands against the proud. But God lavishes grace on those who are humble, recognizing their need for Him and approach Him with reverence and submission.
Humility opens the door to God’s help, healing, and empowerment. (James 4:6) teaches that authentic leadership is not built on pride or position but on humility that invites God’s power and grace into every decision and relationship. Authentic leadership is modeled after Christ, who led by serving. (James 4:6) affirms that God uplifts leaders who lower themselves to lift others.
Question for the Reader:
How can you choose humility in your leadership today so that others see Christ’s strength in you?
Prayer:
Lord, keep me from the trap of pride and self-reliance. Teach me to walk in humility, remembering those who helped me and honoring You above all. May my leadership reflect Christ, who served others with love and grace. Amen.
Reflection Question:
In what areas of your life do you need to replace pride with humility so God’s grace can flow more freely?
