You Cannot Do This Without Him - Day 7/11 (April 13)
You can work all night without Him—and still come up empty.
🙏 John 21:6 (NKJV) — “Cast the net on the right side… and you will find some.”
What Happened
After the resurrection, the disciples return to what they know, fishing. They labor through the entire night, applying their experience, skill, and effort, yet catch nothing. The nets remain empty. The work is real, but the result is absent. At daybreak, Jesus stands on the shore, though they do not yet recognize Him. He speaks a simple instruction. “Cast the net on the right side.” It is not a complex strategy. It is not a change in profession. It is a call to trust and obey.
They respond, not fully understanding, but willing to act on His word. And in that moment, everything changes. The same nets, the same sea, the same men, but now under His direction, the nets are filled beyond capacity. What human effort could not produce, obedience to Christ immediately provides.
This is not merely about fish. It is about revelation. The risen Christ is showing them that apart from Him, even familiar work becomes fruitless. But with Him, even the ordinary becomes abundant. The difference is not location, ability, or effort; it is His presence and their response to it.
In this moment, the disciples begin to understand what Jesus had already told them: “Without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
Their empty nets were not a failure; they were preparation. Their obedience was not a strategy; it was surrender. And the abundance was not earned; it was given.
What It Means
Effort without Christ produces little. Obedience with Christ produces abundance. Dependence is not weakness—it is the design.
Why This Matters Today
We often rely on our own strength, plans, and abilities. But lasting fruit comes only when we follow His direction.
A Simple Truth to Carry
Apart from Him, we accomplish nothing of lasting value.
A Fun Fact!
In 🙏 John 21:11 (NKJV) — “Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken.”
Why do you think the Bible states the specific number of fish that they caught? We do not build meaning from numbers; we receive meaning from Scripture. What Scripture Clearly Shows: The focus of this moment is not the number; it is the One who gives the command. Jesus directs, the disciples obey, and the result is immediate and undeniable. What they could not accomplish through their own effort is accomplished through His word. The catch is abundant, the net holds, and nothing is lost. This reveals a simple and enduring truth: Christ does not ask for better effort. He calls for faithful obedience. The disciples are not learning a fishing lesson but being formed to understand that their future work, especially the calling to gather people into the kingdom, will depend entirely on Him. 🙏 John 15:5 (NKJV) What fills the net is not skill; what fills the net is submission to His voice.
A Prayer
Lord, teach me to depend on You in all things. Guide my steps and help me to follow where You lead. Amen.
